Backtrack: Pearl Jam – Black Unplugged (video)

I always trip out when thinking about the grunge movement in Seattle and how it essentially took over the music industry. It’s hard for young’ns to imagine, but MTV’s “Unplugged” did a great job of essentially “breaking” artists. Before the internet, blogs, and file sharing there was… MTV. (for the sake of “keeping it real,” I didn’t edit the redundancy of that paragraph, but insert this statement to let you know that I know it’s redundant)

I waited on Cameron Crowe’s “PJ20″ documentary thinking I’d have to find a babysitter to go see it. Then I found out it was on PBS. My reaction? I calmly removed myself from the chair I was sitting in, did a back flip, then calmly sat back in the chair.

Anyway… that documentary was the ISHT. I recommend for anyone. Especially aspiring artists in the Northwest who forgot about this time, or never really paid any attention to it. So much good music came from this era and I still listen to it all… on a weekly basis at the least. This was one of my favorite Pearl Jam moments… if you can’t at least respect this then… well… you know.

It’s also cool to know that I can like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” again. It was literally played at every dance and on every radio station, and every hour on MTV. It got the Weird Al treatment even… sheesh. Anyway before I get off on a tangent peep this video and try not to get inspired to love a little more, or even feel a little more.

Until next time…

John Crown – Coffee and Beats (album)

IMG_1530

Coffee and Beats has finally dropped… John Crown drops his workman-like flow over the beats of Mike Weed, DJ Semaj and DJ Phinisey. If you ask multiple people what they’re favorite joint is, they’ll most likely all say a different joint… that’s a good thing. Crown’s offering of diverse content from track to track is what allows this album to be played not only multiple times, but for multiple groups of people. From the vivid storytelling of “Fast Lane” to the acoustic treatment of critically acclaimed “Lily,” to the workman’s anthem “Work Boots,” this album is sure to have something for everyone.

Cop this not only because I was involved, but simply because it’s good music. The album features Action Bronson, Element of Second Family, and Jasper T.

Maffew Ragazino – Rhyme Pays (+ Black Sheep video)

I know it’s been awhile, but I need to stop by to drop a couple older joints you may have slept on. Meet Maffew Ragazino. Ragazino, meet SlacksKidsnBeats. Shouldn’t take you very long to wonder why I think the kid has potential. That Action Bronson guy ended up goin places… Ragazino will be on that track soon enough. Hop on now or later, your choice. Peep the album “Rhyme Pays” as well. Bangers!

Larue – Rise Up (video)

Better late than never, Larue dropped this video courtesy of the crew over at AllYouCanEatHiphop. This joint is produced by Seattle’s Rising Son… joint is dope and visuals do it much justice.

Todd Sykes – Out of the Blue (album)

toddsykes-out of the blue

Todd Sykes hits us again with ANOTHER project… this album is really dope in my opinion. Todd is a throwback producer, using dirty, jazzy samples and chopped up drums. He sticks to his formula on this project… if you don’t download this project, you’re missing out in my opinion.

EvergreenOne – F#@k Vampires (prod by Truss One)

fuckvampires

Welp… my first blog in some time… sorry I been away, but life has a way of letting you know you need to slow you roll a little. I had that call recently.

I have a whole host of posts to catch up on, so you may see a little flurry… first post is from EvergreenOne. We finally got a sniff of what’s in store for his upcoming solo effort with Truss One behind the boards. F@#k Vampires. That is all.

Evidence – You (video)

Wow. Preemo and Evidence need to do more work together. Preemo is just… he’s the dopest to ever produce hiphop records. I haven’t stopped playin this since I purchased it on iTunes. Currently in the top spot on the “rotation” list on the iPhone. Yup.

REWIND: Geto Boys – Straight Gangsterism (video)

I love what Big K.R.I.T. brings to the game today. But just know that whatever criticism I may throw his way, is because I’ve seen it before. That goes for a lot of hip-hop today. Very few artists out there I feel I haven’t seen anything like THEM.

Let this video resonate with you for a minute. The Geto Boys were one of my favorite groups when I was a kid. The thing I liked about them is, they evolved, their content evolved, and they spoke on society at large and their opinion/perspective. I remember buying this tape and at first, being pretty distraught at the fact Willie D broke from the group. Big Mike quickly changed my mood. Could it be? The Geto Boys were… even better?! In my opinion, yes. This is probably my favorite album from them, although the others I still hold near and dear to my heart. This isht was ridiculous though. Even now. Big Mike brought another pure lyricist to the group, only strengthening their sound. He went on to release a couple BANGERS too, “Somethin Serious” and “Still Serious.” He released a few after that to little fanfare, but he’s still around… check for him. My favorite part of this video? Big Mike pronouncing interested as “INStrested.” Dope. I’m glad they didn’t change that, even for the edited version. THAT’s hiphop.

So youngn’s, just know any criticism or hesitance I throw toward anything new, is most likely because I’ve seen something similar. I’m just using K.R.I.T. as an example. The boy raw though.

John Crown – Coffee and Beats promo (video)

Well, Coffee and Beats is on the way this Fall… almost a year removed from the “Before I Wake You Up” ep, John Crown is ready to release his latest album. In these times, I’d say his message on this album should resonate with A LOT of people. Are they ready for reality in the form of lyrics though? Offended by Watch the Throne luxury rap? This is the album for you.
